It’s unusual to be asked to leave the quarry sawmarks
on a stone rather than polishing them away. But this was
the request, and the most prominent of the marks can be
seen at the top of the headstone asymetrically enclosing
the curlew. This bird was actually Brian’s logo.
He was a toy-maker on the edge of the English Lakes. The
lettering is bold and chunky and minimal; packed together
on top of itself like toys in a toy cupboard. It’s
a stone that I cut long ago, but it has a primative appeal
that I still find pleasing.
